"Garden Route Game Lodge room was basic but clean, and you could hear the lions from bed which is exactly what I paid for. Penguin stop ran a bit rushed. Driver Thabo was class, told us stories the whole way back."

"Guide switched between English and French the whole trip which my mother appreciated. Elephant encounter was the highlight, we fed one called Sally. Ostrich tour was funnier than it sounds. Would do 3 days next time for the coast."

"Went in December, busy but the lodge handled it. Food was better than expected for the price, lamb braai both nights. Water and snacks in the van saved us. Only heads up — no refund on this tour if plans change, nearly caught me out."

"Honest review: day one is a LOT of sitting. Five hours to Oudtshoorn, caves, then more driving. But sunrise game drive on day two made up for it — four rhino at the waterhole before breakfast. Pack a jumper, mornings are freezing."

"Caves were bigger than I expected, our French-speaking guide knew every stalactite by name. Chandelier Lodge was proper dark at night, saw more stars than the drive deserved. Only gripe: 5.45am start both mornings."

"Booked the lodge safari for my parents' anniversary and it landed. Stony Point penguins first, then a lioness with two cubs on the afternoon drive. Guide stopped the vehicle so long for photos we nearly missed dinner, nobody complained."

What to Expect on a 2 Day Garden Route Tour

Two days is the shortest workable taste of the Garden Route, and every tour from Cape Town spends the first five hours getting there — pickup lands between 06:00 and 06:30, and by midday you're in the Klein Karoo. Both tours on this page build the trip around Oudtshoorn's caves and a Big Five game lodge rather than the coastal N2 towns, so expect long drives, one overnight at a game reserve, and two game drives within roughly 48 hours.

🕳️

Cango Caves

Day one usually opens with the Heritage Tour through Africa's largest show-cave system, north of Oudtshoorn. Tours depart hourly 09:00–16:00 and take about an hour; the Adventure Tour is currently unavailable.

🦁

Two Game Drives

You get one drive in the late afternoon and another at sunrise, when animals are most active. That's the payoff of overnighting at the lodge instead of doing a day trip — day visitors get neither.

🐘

Big Five Territory

Tours overnight at private reserves — Chandelier Game Lodge on the pricier tour, Garden Route Game Lodge on the budget one — both in Big Five country near Mossel Bay. Lions, elephants, rhino and giraffe are the standard sightings.

🦩

Ostrich Country

Oudtshoorn calls itself the ostrich capital of the world, and the small-group tour bundles an ostrich tour plus elephant and giraffe encounters into the entrance fees. Expect show farms, long necks, and photo stops.

🐧

Stony Point Penguins

The lodge-safari tour detours to the African penguin colony at Stony Point, near Betty's Bay on the drive out of Cape Town. It's a boardwalk stroll past hundreds of breeding birds — bring a lens.

⏰

Early Pickup

Both tours collect you between 06:00 and 06:30 from Cape Town hotels and apartments, so plan for a 05:30 alarm. Be downstairs ten minutes early; the vehicle carries water, snacks and charging ports.

Things to Know Before Booking

The two tours on this page look similar and cost wildly different amounts — $529 versus $1,743 — so check what's actually included before you click book. Here's what matters.

Pickup Window

Both tours pick up from Cape Town City Centre hotels and apartments between 06:00 and 06:30, and you're asked to be ready ten minutes early. Staying outside the standard pickup zone? Contact the operator before booking to confirm. Give an accurate location when you book or the vehicle may run late.

Price Gap

The small-group safari tour runs $1,743.23 per person; the lodge safari tour runs $529.19. The gap mostly buys entrance fees — Cango Caves, two game drives, elephant and giraffe experiences and the ostrich tour are all included on the expensive one, while the budget tour excludes them and you pay as you go.

Meals & Lodging

The $1,743 tour includes lunch, dinner, breakfast and a night at Chandelier Game Lodge. The $529 tour covers dinner, breakfast and a night at Garden Route Game Lodge, but lunch is on you. Both vehicles have air conditioning; the cheaper one throws in water, snacks and charging ports.

Cancellation Terms

Read this part carefully. The small-group tour is all sales final — cancel and you get nothing back. The lodge safari tour gives a full refund if you cancel at least 24 hours before departure, which makes it the safer pick if your plans might shift.

Guides & Language

The small-group tour runs with an English or French guide in a shared vehicle; the lodge tour is English only. Group sizes are small, so the guide's commentary on the five-hour drive out is part of what you're paying for.

Accessibility

Both tours list wheelchair-accessible transport and surfaces. The small-group tour accepts all fitness levels; the lodge tour asks for a moderate fitness level for the game drives and stops. Infants can ride in a stroller on the lodge tour, and infant seats are available.

What's Missing

Neither 2-day tour covers the classic coastal route — Knysna, the Heads, Storms River Mouth and the Tsitsikamma suspension bridges all get skipped. If those are on your list, operators run 3-day, 4-day and 5-day Garden Route tours from roughly $700–$1,400 that include them. Book the longer version if the coast is why you came.

Long Drive Reality

Cape Town to Oudtshoorn is about five hours, so expect around ten hours of driving across the two days. Both tours front-load day one heavily. If you'd rather not sit in a vehicle that long, you can fly Cape Town to George Airport in 50 minutes and join a tour from there instead.

Tour pickup runs 06:00–06:30 on day one, with the vehicle back in Cape Town by evening of day two. Everything on the itinerary fits inside that window, but the fixed opening times below control what you can actually see.

  • Cango Caves: Heritage Tours depart on the hour, 09:00–16:00, daily except Christmas Day. The Adventure Tour is temporarily unavailable.
  • SANParks day-visitor gates (Storms River Mouth, Wilderness, Knysna): summer (Sep–Apr) 07:00–18:00; winter (May–Aug) 08:00–17:00. No entry outside these hours, and it's legally enforced.
  • Robberg Nature Reserve: roughly 07:00–20:00 in summer, 08:00–18:00 in winter — confirm on capenature.co.za.

If you're extending your trip after the tour, note that SANParks accommodation can be occupied from 14:00 and must be vacated by 10:00. Arriving at 15:00 at Storms River Mouth leaves you two hours of light in winter.

Both 2-day tours start in Cape Town with hotel pickup — you don't need to arrange anything beyond being downstairs on time. Getting to Cape Town, or travelling independently afterwards, is where the choices start.

  • Self-drive from Cape Town: the N2 covers Cape Town–Mossel Bay in 385 km (~4 h). Rental cars run about R350–R700/day in season; a one-way drop in Gqeberha adds roughly R1,800.
  • Fly: George Airport (GRJ) is the Garden Route's own airport, a ~50-minute flight from Cape Town International, with rental cars at the terminal.
  • From the east: Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) airport sits 190 km (~2 h) from Storms River via the N2.
  • Bus: Intercape runs coaches to George, Knysna and Plettenberg Bay; Baz Bus does hop-on hop-off backpacker stops, 5–7 h from Cape Town.

The tour itself covers about five hours of driving on day one to reach Oudtshoorn, over the Outeniqua Pass. Sit back — it's the guide's road, not yours.

The Garden Route is a year-round destination, and a 2-day tour runs in every month — but the experience differs sharply by season.

Summer (November–March) brings daytime highs of 20–28°C and the biggest crowds and prices in December–February. Winter (June–August) is coolest — George sees lows around 8°C, highs near 20°C — with June the wettest month at about 12 rain days. Game viewing actually improves in the dry months, when animals concentrate at waterholes.

Two seasonal draws worth planning around: southern right whales pass the coast June–November (peaking July–September), and the Knysna Oyster Festival runs about 10 days in July. Wildflowers bloom August–September.

Shoulder months — April–May and September–October — hit roughly 18–25°C with fewer people and lower prices. That's when we'd go.

Both tours on this page list wheelchair-accessible transport, wheelchair-accessible vehicle options and accessible surfaces. The small-group tour accepts all fitness levels; the lodge tour asks for a moderate fitness level, and infant seats and strollers are fine on board.

Travelling independently afterwards? The park infrastructure is decent:

  • SANParks has five adapted accommodation units — three in Tsitsikamma, two at Wilderness Ebb-and-Flow — plus three adapted campsite ablutions. These are held off the online booking system: email [email protected] or call +27 12 428 9111.
  • The Garden of Eden boardwalk (off the N2 between Knysna and Plettenberg Bay) is a marked 800 m circular route usable by wheelchair.
  • Older visitors can reach the Knysna Heads, Wilderness beaches and the Storms River Mouth deck by car, with only a short boardwalk to the suspension bridges.

Detailed accessibility PDFs for all three park sections are on the SANParks website.

On tour, the vehicle carries air conditioning, and the lodge-safari option adds water, snacks and charging ports. Overnight stops are full game lodges with restaurants — dinner and breakfast are included on both tours, and the small-group tour adds lunch.

At the stops themselves:

  • Cango Caves has a Heritage Tour departing hourly; tickets cost R150 adult / R100 child if you're buying separately.
  • Storms River Mouth has a restaurant and deck at the car park, reached without stairs.
  • Knysna's waterfront and Thesen Island hold the SANParks aquarium with live Knysna seahorses — the world's most threatened seahorse, found in only three estuaries on Earth.

Payment note: the Plaatbos and Goesa gates in Storms River Village, covering the forest trails and the Tsitsikamma Big Tree, take card only — no cash. Travel with a working chip card.

Malaria: the whole region is malaria-free. No prophylaxis needed.

On a guided tour most rules are the guide's problem, but a few will land on you.

  • Gate times are law. SANParks gates close 18:00 (17:00 winter) with no exceptions; overstaying can bring a summons under the Protected Areas Act. Sign the indemnity form at entry and carry ID — any adult can be asked for it.
  • No pets in SANParks areas, and no collecting plants, animals, dry wood or anything natural. Drones need prior SANParks authorisation.
  • Alcohol may not be consumed in public areas of the parks.
  • Drive left. South Africans drive on the left; if you're renting after the tour, avoid night driving on the N2 — roads are poorly lit and baboons, livestock and unlit vehicles are real hazards.

Inside the Tsitsikamma Marine Protected Area — Africa's oldest, established 1964 — nothing may be taken, period. It's a 100% no-take zone.

Frequently Asked Questions

What time does the 2-day Garden Route tour pick me up?

Both tours collect passengers from Cape Town hotels and apartments between 06:00 and 06:30 on day one, and you should be ready ten minutes before your slot. Provide an accurate pickup location when booking — wrong addresses delay the whole vehicle. If you're staying outside the standard City Centre pickup zone, contact the operator to confirm before booking.

Why is one 2-day tour $529 and the other $1,743?

The $1,743 small-group tour bundles everything: Cango Caves entry, two game drives, elephant and giraffe experiences, an ostrich tour, plus lunch, dinner and breakfast. The $529 lodge safari covers the overnight, two game drives, dinner and breakfast, but entrance fees and extra activities are excluded. Work out what you'd actually pay for at the gate before assuming the cheap one is better value — for most people the gap narrows fast.

Can I cancel my Garden Route 2-day tour?

It depends which one. The small-group Big 5 safari tour is all sales final — no refund for any cancellation. The Garden Route Lodge safari tour gives a full refund if you cancel at least 24 hours before departure. If your plans are loose, book the refundable one.

Will I see the Big Five on a 2-day tour?

Both tours overnight at private Big Five reserves — Chandelier Game Lodge or Garden Route Game Lodge — and include an afternoon drive plus a sunrise drive, which is when sighting odds are highest. Private reserves don't guarantee the full five, but lion and elephant sightings are routine and the guides track daily. Two drives beat the single drive a day trip allows.

Does a 2-day tour include Knysna and Storms River Mouth?

No. These 2-day tours run the inland loop — Oudtshoorn, Cango Caves, a game lodge near Mossel Bay — and skip the coastal N2 towns entirely. Knysna, the Heads and the Tsitsikamma suspension bridges need a 3-day minimum; operators run 3, 4 and 5-day Garden Route tours from roughly $700–$1,400 that include them.

How much driving is involved?

About ten hours across the two days. Day one alone is roughly five hours from Cape Town to Oudtshoorn, over the Outeniqua Pass, before the cave tour and afternoon game drive. If that sounds like a slog, you can fly Cape Town to George Airport in 50 minutes and pick up a tour or rental car from there.

Is the 2-day Garden Route tour suitable for kids?

The lodge safari tour is the family-friendly one: infants can ride in a stroller, specialized infant seats are available, and the Stony Point penguin colony is a reliable hit with children. The small-group tour works for all ages too but demands an early start. Note that if you travel independently later, some park activities carry age restrictions for safety.

Are the Garden Route tours wheelchair accessible?

Yes — both tours list wheelchair-accessible transportation and accessible surfaces, and the small-group tour is rated suitable for all physical fitness levels. The lodge tour asks for moderate fitness for the game drives and walking stops. For independent park visits afterwards, SANParks has five adapted accommodation units that must be booked directly by phone or email.

What should I pack for a 2-day Garden Route tour?

Sturdy shoes with grip, a hat, sunscreen and layers — weather on the coast turns fast, and morning game drives in an open vehicle get cold even in summer. Bring a warm waterproof layer between June and August. Binoculars and a camera with zoom earn their space on the drives.

Do I need malaria pills for the Garden Route?

No. The entire Garden Route region is malaria-free, which is one reason it's South Africa's most popular family destination. No prophylaxis is needed, unlike Kruger and the Lowveld.
