"Booked the dorm package to save money and honestly the backpackers were better than I expected — Island Vibe in Jeffreys Bay is right on the beach. Only gripe is the 4am-ish departures and lunch stops being quick service petrol station stuff. The Botlierskop 4x4 drive on the last morning was class, saw giraffe and buffalo up close."

"Whale season had just ended when we went in December, but we still spotted a southern right off the cliff path near Knysna. The Heads viewpoint is worth the stop. Tour was well run, guide knew his history — the woodcutter story in Knysna and the Dias landing at Mossel Bay. Long days in the van though, bring a pillow."

"Started in Port Elizabeth, ended in Cape Town, and honestly that direction is underrated — Cape Agulhas on day one with basically nobody else there. Weather turned on us near Tsitsikamma, rain and wind, so the kayak option got cancelled. Guide sorted a longer stop at the Knysna Heads instead. Would do it again, maybe in spring."

"Canoeing on the Touw River in Wilderness was my favourite included activity, completely calm, kingfishers everywhere. The Cango Caves Heritage Tour was impressive but the Adventure Tour was closed, which I only found out on the day. Knysna seahorse tank on Thesen Island is tiny but worth ten minutes."

"Five days is chaos in the best way. Our guide Thabo got us through Route 62 with a wine stop on day one, Cango Caves by lunch on day two, and we still had time for the ostrich photos in Oudtshoorn. Addo on day three was the highlight — counted 40-plus elephants at one waterhole. Fair warning: early starts every single day."

"Did the bungy at Bloukrans. 216 metres. My legs were shaking for an hour after. Waiting around took almost two hours because our group was big, so bring snacks. The suspension bridges at Storms River the same afternoon made up for it though — get there before the crowds if you can."

What to Expect on a 5 Day Garden Route Tour

Five days, roughly 2,000 km, and a lot of South Africa packed into one minivan. A typical route runs Cape Town to Addo Elephant National Park (or the reverse), stopping at the Cango Caves, Tsitsikamma, the Knysna Heads and a private game reserve on the way back — expect 4 to 6 hours of driving a day with early starts and full days. It's fast-paced, and operators themselves say it suits the young-at-heart travelling on limited time.

🐘

Addo Elephant Safari

Two game drives feature on the top-rated tour: one inside Addo Elephant National Park in the tour minivan, one in an open 4x4 at Botlierskop private reserve. Addo is malaria-free and home to the Big 5, so no prophylaxis needed. Day 2 of the drive gets you there via the Cango Caves and the Karoo.

🕯️

Cango Caves

Africa's largest show-cave system sits in the Klein Karoo below the Swartberg, reached over the Outeniqua Pass from George. Tours include the 1-hour Heritage Tour (R150 adult, R100 child), departing hourly 09:00–16:00. The Adventure Tour through the narrow crawl sections is currently unavailable.

🌉

Storms River & Tsitsikamma

A short boardwalk from the Storms River Mouth car park leads through coastal forest to suspension bridges over the gorge where the river meets the Indian Ocean. Allow 1–2 hours. Entrance is covered on tours that include Tsitsikamma National Park fees (R367 per international adult if you go alone).

🪢

Bloukrans Bungy Option

The 216 m jump off Bloukrans Bridge is the world's highest commercial bridge bungy and the tour's most popular optional extra — pre-booked by the operator, paid on the day, decided by Day 1. Waiting time runs 1 to 2 hours depending on group size. Non-jumpers get the Sky Walk or the gorge-viewing deck.

🦪

Knysna Heads & Oysters

The sandstone Heads guard the narrow mouth of the Knysna estuary, best seen from the Eastern Head viewpoints. The estuary shelters the Knysna seahorse — found in only three estuaries on Earth — viewable in the SANParks tank on Thesen Island. If your dates hit July, the Oyster Festival runs about 10 days.

🌊

Cape Agulhas

Two of the three tours stop at the southernmost point of the African continent, where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet. It breaks up the long Day 1 haul from Cape Town with a photo stop most self-drivers skip. The Port Elizabeth–to–Cape Town route also takes in the Little Karoo and Overberg on the way west.

Things to Know Before Booking

The three 5-day tours on this page cover similar ground at different prices and from different start points. Here's what actually varies — and what catches people out.

Pick your direction

Two tours run Cape Town to Addo and back to Cape Town (a loop), while the third starts in Port Elizabeth and finishes in Cape Town. The PE start costs less ($613 vs $829+) and skips the return leg, but it only picks up in Port Elizabeth, Addo, Colchester, Port Alfred and Jeffreys Bay. If you're flying out of Cape Town anyway, the loop tours save you a one-way rental drop fee of about R1,800.

What's included

The Best-of-South-Africa tour ($828.66) covers entrance fees for Addo, Tsitsikamma and the Cango Caves, both game drives, four nights' accommodation and breakfast — plus a Route 62 wine tasting. The cheaper PE tour lists only breakfast, a local guide and air conditioning. Check the exclusions before comparing prices: optional activities like the bungy are always paid on the day, direct to the supplier.

Accommodation tiers

The Cape Town loop tours sell three packages: Saver (dorm beds in backpackers like Uthando in Oudtshoorn and Island Vibe in Jeffreys Bay), 3-star Comfort guesthouses, and 4-star Luxe lodges. Dorm packages bar under-18s entirely. Note that backpackers sit far from the guesthouses, so couples and solo travellers in mixed groups may spend evenings apart.

Minimum ages

The Best-of-South-Africa tour takes children from age 8 (accompanied, private rooms only). The Cape-to-Addo safari tour sets the minimum at 12. The PE tour is the family option — infant seats available, strollers fine. None of the tours suit toddlers well given 4–6 hours of daily driving.

Booking window

Multi-day small-group tours need minimum numbers to run; if the minimum isn't met you'll be offered a different date, a different tour, or a full refund. Book 2+ days ahead if you want hotel pickup in Cape Town (within 5 km of the centre for one tour, 10 km for the other). December–February is peak season on the whole coast, so summer departures fill first.

Separate entrance fees

If a stop isn't on your tour's inclusion list, budget for it: SANParks charges per section, per day — Storms River Mouth is R367 per international adult, Wilderness R235, Knysna R231, and the Big Tree trails R96 (card only). Robberg Nature Reserve near Plettenberg Bay, a common free-time stop, runs about R75 adult at the gate. A Wild Card exempts you from all SANParks daily fees if you're extending your trip.

Cancellation

All three tours give a full refund if you cancel at least 24 hours before departure. Travel insurance is excluded across the board and recommended. Itineraries can run in reverse or swap days, so don't book an independent activity on a specific day expecting the schedule to hold.

Fitness and access

All three tours state they suit all fitness levels, and the included activities (caves tour, boardwalks, canoeing in Wilderness) are gentle. Bring walking shoes, a hat, sunscreen and a jacket for cool evenings. Travellers with medical conditions must declare them at booking on the Cape-to-Addo tour — undeclared conditions can get a booking refused at departure.

Plan Your Visit to Garden Route

SANParks day-visitor gates on the Garden Route open 07:00–18:00 in summer (Sep–Apr) and 08:00–17:00 in winter (May–Aug). No entry outside these hours, and the times are legally enforced — overstaying can earn you a summons under the Protected Areas Act.

The same hours apply to the staffed Plaatbos and Goesa gates in Storms River Village (card payments only). Robberg Nature Reserve is open 07:00–20:00 in summer (Oct–Apr) and roughly 08:00–18:00 in winter, with no entry in the hour before closing — confirm on capenature.co.za.

Cango Caves run Heritage Tours on the hour, 09:00–16:00, daily except Christmas Day. SANParks accommodation checks in from 14:00 and must be vacated by 10:00 — arriving at 15:00 on a winter afternoon leaves about two hours of usable light.

On a 5-day tour, your guide handles the timing, but expect early departures: the big sights (Storms River Mouth, Knysna Heads, Robberg) are busiest 09:00–15:00, and tours go early to beat both crowds and the gate queues.

George Airport (GRJ) is the Garden Route's own airport, a 50-minute flight from Cape Town International, with rental cars at the terminal. Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) is the eastern gateway, 190 km (~2 h) from Storms River on the N2.

Driving from Cape Town: 385 km to Mossel Bay (~4 h), then the core route runs Mossel Bay–Wilderness 50 km, Wilderness–Knysna 45 km, Knysna–Plettenberg Bay 32 km, Plettenberg Bay–Storms River 68 km. The full Mossel Bay–Storms River stretch is about 200 km — 2–3 hours non-stop, which rather misses the point.

Most 5-day tours start with hotel pickup: within 5 km of central Cape Town or Stellenbosch on one tour (book at least 2 days ahead), within a 10 km radius of Cape Town on another, and from any location in Port Elizabeth, Addo, Colchester, Port Alfred and Jeffreys Bay on the third. Pickup begins up to 90 minutes before departure, and your exact time is confirmed the day before.

Bus alternatives exist — Intercape coaches and the Baz Bus hop-on hop-off backpacker service — but they rarely cover the whole trip without shuttles in between. On tour, you'll cover roughly 2,000 km over five days at 4–6 hours of driving daily.

The Garden Route works year-round; it's one of the reasons it's South Africa's most popular family route. Summer (November–March) brings highs of 20–28°C and beach weather. Whale season runs June–November, peaking July–September — southern rights visible from cliff paths and from Reebok near Mossel Bay.

July also brings the Knysna Oyster Festival (about 10 days, running since 1983), and August–September the wildflower displays. Shoulder months April–May and September–October sit at a mild 18–25°C with fewer crowds and lower prices — arguably the sweet spot for a tour.

Skip December–February if you can: peak-season crowds and the highest prices along the whole coast. June is the wettest month (about 12 rain days on average), and winter lows around George hit 8°C — pack warm waterproof layers for boat trips and evening game drives. Rain falls year-round here; that's why it's called the Garden Route.

All three 5-day tours state they're suitable for all fitness levels, and included activities (caves, boardwalks, lagoon cruises) aren't physically demanding. Some optional extras — the bungy, surfing at Jeffreys Bay, adventure add-ons — do require fitness and have age limits.

Independently, the route handles limited mobility well. SANParks has five adapted accommodation units (three in Tsitsikamma, two at Wilderness Ebb-and-Flow) plus three adapted campsite ablutions, held off the online booking system — email [email protected] or call +27 12 428 9111 directly.

The Garden of Eden, just off the N2 between Knysna and Plettenberg Bay, has an 800 m circular forest route marked as wheelchair-accessible under giant yellowwood canopy. At Storms River Mouth, the suspension bridges are a short boardwalk stroll from the car park, and the restaurant deck is reachable by car. Detailed accessibility PDFs for all three park sections are on the SANParks website.

Children: tours take kids from age 8 (one) or 12 (another); the PE tour allows infants with specialised seats. SANParks itself charges children only from age 2, but some park activities carry their own age restrictions.

Tour accommodation varies by package: Saver dorms (Uthando Backpackers in Oudtshoorn, Island Vibe in Jeffreys Bay, Pili Pili in Sedgefield), 3-star Comfort guesthouses (88 Baron van Reede, Gerald's Gift, Sea Whisper, Fairy Knowe), or 4-star Luxe lodges (Hlangana Lodge, Addo Wildlife Lodge, Dolphin Dunes). Backpackers usually have communal kitchens if you'd rather self-cater.

Breakfast is included on all tours, taken at the accommodation. Lunch is en-route with limited time and options; dinner is free time — your guide recommends local restaurants, or you book meals at the overnight stop. Tell the operator about dietary requirements at booking.

At Storms River Mouth there's a restaurant and deck at the car park. Inside the parks, note that the Plaatbos and Goesa gates and the Big Tree are card only — no cash. Carry a working chip card plus some cash for small towns. Park entrance costs if you go solo: Storms River Mouth R367 international adult, Wilderness R235, Knysna R231, Nature's Valley R165 (SA citizens pay R82 at Storms River).

Optional activities are pre-booked for the group — you decide on Day 1 and pay the supplier directly. Bungy waits run 1–2 hours.

Inside SANParks areas: no pets of any kind (assistance guide dogs with permits are the only exemption — transgressors face a summons and the animal is confiscated), no collecting plants, animals, dry wood or any natural items, and no littering. Firearms must be declared at the gate and sealed. Alcohol may not be consumed in public areas of the parks.

Gate times are legally enforceable — plan to be through well before closing, and don't drive after dark in the parks. You'll sign an indemnity form at entry, and adults must carry ID that rangers can request. Reckless driving and after-hours driving are specifically cited offences under section 64(1) of the Protected Areas Act.

Drone use in national parks requires prior SANParks authorisation. Personal photography is fine everywhere; commercial filming needs a permit. No flash or lights on wildlife at night.

On the road generally: South Africans drive on the left, and the N2 between towns is poorly lit with real hazards — baboons, livestock, pedestrians, unlit broken-down vehicles. Tours handle all the driving for you, which is part of the appeal. Cancellation policy on all three tours: full refund up to 24 hours before departure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do the 5-day Garden Route tours include entrance fees to the parks?

It depends on the tour. The Best of South Africa tour ($828.66) includes entrance to Addo, Tsitsikamma and the Cango Caves; the Cape to Addo safari includes Addo, Tsitsikamma and Wilderness entrances. The cheaper Port Elizabeth–Cape Town tour ($613.24) lists only breakfast and a guide, so budget separately — SANParks charges per section, per day, with Storms River Mouth at R367 per international adult.

How much driving is there each day on a 5-day Garden Route tour?

Expect 4 to 6 hours a day, covering about 2,000 km over the five days on the Cape Town loop tours. Day 1 alone runs Cape Town to Oudtshoorn via Route 62 and wine tasting. Operators describe these itineraries as packed and fast-paced — good for covering a lot with limited time, tiring if you wanted slow travel.

Is the Bloukrans bungy jump included in the tour price?

No. The 216 m Bloukrans bungy — the world's highest commercial bridge bungy — is an optional activity on the Cape Town loop tours. The operator pre-books space for the group, you decide whether to partake on Day 1, and you pay the supplier directly on the day. Waiting time at the bridge runs 1 to 2 hours, and the activity is weather-dependent.

Can I start the tour in Port Elizabeth instead of Cape Town?

Yes. The 5 Day Garden Route Tour runs Port Elizabeth to Cape Town, with pickup from any location in Port Elizabeth, Addo, Colchester, Port Alfred and Jeffreys Bay. It's also the cheapest option at $613.24 and takes in Cape Agulhas, the southernmost point of Africa, on the way west. The other two tours start and end in Cape Town.

What accommodation do I get on a 5-day Garden Route tour?

The Cape Town loop tours offer three tiers: Saver dorm packages in backpackers (from about $829 including everything else), 3-star Comfort guesthouses, and 4-star Luxe lodges such as Hlangana Lodge in Oudtshoorn and Addo Wildlife Lodge. Under-18s can't book dorm packages, and Sedgefield accommodation occasionally sells out, in which case you'll stay in a nearby town.

Are these tours suitable for children?

Partly. The Best of South Africa tour takes children from age 8, who must travel with an adult in a private room. The Cape to Addo safari sets a minimum of 12 for the same reason. The Port Elizabeth–Cape Town tour is the genuinely family-friendly one, with infant seats and stroller access. All tours state they suit any fitness level.

Will I see elephants on the tour?

Almost certainly at Addo — it's SANParks' dedicated elephant park and home to the Big 5. The Best of South Africa tour includes two game drives: one inside Addo in the tour minivan, and one in an open 4x4 at Botlierskop private reserve. Addo is malaria-free, so no prophylaxis needed, unlike Kruger.

What happens if it rains or the weather is bad?

Included activities like the caves and game drives run in most weather. Optional activities — bungy, surfing at Jeffreys Bay, beach horse rides — are subject to weather conditions and can't be guaranteed, with no refund from the operator since you pay the supplier directly. Rain falls year-round on the Garden Route; June averages about 12 rain days.

How far in advance should I book a 5-day Garden Route tour?

Book at least a few days ahead if you want hotel pickup — one Cape Town tour requires booking 2+ days early for pickup within 5 km of the centre. For December–February departures, the peak season along the whole coast, book well in advance. Small-group tours also need minimum numbers to run; if the minimum isn't met you'll get an alternative date, a different tour, or a full refund.

Can I cancel my Garden Route tour if my plans change?

All three tours on this page offer a full refund if you cancel at least 24 hours before departure. Travel insurance is excluded and recommended, since anything inside that 24-hour window and any pre-paid optional activities are on you. Itineraries may also run in reverse or swap days, so don't lock in independent plans against a specific day of the schedule.
