Tours from Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha) enter the Garden Route from its eastern end, hitting the Tsitsikamma forests and Storms River Mouth roughly two hours after leaving the city. Day tours run 9–10 hours and get as far as the Crags, just short of Plettenberg Bay. The longer options — three, four or five days — continue through Knysna and over the Outeniqua Pass to Oudtshoorn, with several finishing in Cape Town so you never drive the same road twice.
A boardwalk through coastal forest leads to a chain of suspension bridges spanning the gorge where the Storms River meets the Indian Ocean. Multi-day tours include the 2 km hike from the rest camp. It's also the official start of the Otter Trail, South Africa's most famous hike.
The bridge stands 216 m above the Bloukrans River and hosts the world's highest commercial bridge bungy. Tours stop at the viewpoint; jumpers book separately on the day. Non-jumpers can walk the Sky Walk out to the platform.
Day tours to the Crags include entry to these two adjoining sanctuaries. Monkeyland has free-roaming primates across a forest canopy walk, and Birds of Eden runs one of the world's largest free-flight aviaries. Both are covered in the $217.84 full-day tour.
Sandstone cliffs guard the narrow mouth of the Knysna estuary, best seen from the Eastern Head viewpoints or a sunset lagoon cruise. The estuary shelters the Knysna seahorse, which lives in only three estuaries on Earth. Multi-day tours stop at the waterfront before heading inland.
Cross the Outeniqua Pass into the Klein Karoo and you reach Africa's largest show-cave system. The one-hour Heritage Tour costs R150 per adult and departs hourly from 09:00. Oudtshoorn's ostrich show farms sit alongside, and most 3- and 4-day tours include both.
The five-day tour starting at $908.91 opens with a Big Five game drive at Schotia Private Reserve on day one. Addo Elephant National Park sits 190 km east of Storms River if you want more. Some full-day options ($348.65) run a guided safari out of Port Elizabeth without touching the coast.
Nine tours currently run from Port Elizabeth, from a 9-hour day trip to a 5-day one-way to Cape Town. Prices range from $159.69 to $921.42 per person, and what's included varies a lot between operators — read the inclusions list before you pay.
Two day tours cover Tsitsikamma ($159.69) or the Crags sanctuaries ($217.84–$221.02). Multi-day options run 3, 4 or 5 days, mostly one-way and ending in George or Cape Town. There's also a private/small-group 4-day version at $921.42 with a dedicated driver-guide throughout.
Most operators pick up from any location in Port Elizabeth, plus Addo, Colchester, Port Alfred and Jeffreys Bay on the longer tours. Cruise terminal pickup is standard on day tours. Expect a call or message the day before to confirm your exact time and guide.
Check carefully. The $159.69 and $821.81 tours include Tsitsikamma National Park entry and the Big Tree; the 4-day and 3-day tours add Cango Caves and an ostrich farm. If a tour excludes entry, the Storms River Mouth conservation fee is R367 per international adult per day. Wild Card holders pay nothing at the gate.
Day tours rarely sell out outside peak season, but December through February fills the whole coast — book those months well ahead. If you plan to hike the Otter Trail independently, it's capped at 12 hikers per day and sells out about a year in advance.
Most tours refund in full if you cancel at least 24 hours before departure. The 3-day and 4-day one-way tours to Cape Town are stricter: you need to cancel 3 full days ahead or you get nothing back. Factor that in if your flights might shift.
The 5-day tour at $613.24 requires a minimum of 2 people per booking, and you must carry a valid passport on travel day. The private 4-day tour also needs two adults minimum. Day tours have no minimum. Infants ride free on laps on most of them.
Most day tours take strollers and offer infant seats, and several suit all fitness levels. Two tours flag moderate fitness, and the safari-inclusive 5-day isn't recommended for pregnant travellers or anyone with spinal injuries or poor cardiovascular health. For independent park stays, SANParks has five wheelchair-adapted units — book those directly by email, since they're held off the online system.
The 4-day Cape Town tour throws in Hermanus, Betty's Bay penguin colony and Cape Agulhas, the southernmost point in Africa. Others stick to the classic forest-and-coast core. Addo Elephant National Park is a short hop from Port Elizabeth if you're arranging your own extra day.

SANParks day-visitor gates on the Garden Route keep fixed hours: 07:00–18:00 in summer (September–April) and 08:00–17:00 in winter (May–August). No entry outside these hours, and the times are strictly enforced — overstaying can mean a summons under the Protected Areas Act.
The same hours apply to the staffed Plaatbos and Goesa gates in Storms River Village, which cover the forest trails and the Tsitsikamma Big Tree. Those gates take card payments only.
Cango Caves: Heritage Tours depart on the hour, 09:00–16:00, daily except Christmas Day. The Adventure Tour is temporarily unavailable.
Robberg Nature Reserve (Plettenberg Bay) opens 07:00 and closes between 18:00 and 20:00 depending on season — confirm on capenature.co.za, and don't arrive in the final hour, since entry is refused then.
If you're overnighting in SANParks accommodation, units open at 14:00 on arrival and must be vacated by 10:00 on departure. Arriving at 15:00 leaves you barely two hours of daylight for hiking in winter.
Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha) is the eastern gateway to the Garden Route. The city sits 190 km (~2 hours) from Storms River on the N2, so every tour from here starts with a straightforward coastal drive west.
Town-to-town hops along the route are short: Plettenberg Bay–Storms River is 68 km (~50 min), Knysna–Plettenberg Bay 32 km (~25 min), Wilderness–Knysna 45 km (~35 min). You never spend more than an hour between stops.
Tour pickup: operators collect from any Port Elizabeth address, including the cruise terminal, and most extend to Jeffreys Bay, Colchester and Addo on multi-day trips. Someone contacts you the day before with your exact time.
Self-driving instead? A one-way rental ending in Cape Town saves an ~800 km return but adds a drop fee of roughly R1,800. Flying home from George Airport (GRJ) after a 3-day tour is often the cheaper exit.
Drive on the left, and plan every leg for daylight. The N2 between towns is poorly lit at night, and baboons, livestock and unlit broken-down vehicles are real hazards.
The Garden Route works year-round, and rain falls in every month — that's why it's green. Summer (November–March) brings daytime highs of 20–28°C and beach weather.
Whale season runs June–November, peaking July–September. Southern right whales show up from cliff paths around Mossel Bay and Plettenberg Bay, and boat trips run from three harbours. July also brings the Knysna Oyster Festival, about 10 days of oysters and wine running since 1983.
Wildflowers bloom August–September. If neither whales nor flowers matter to you, aim for the shoulders: April–May and September–October deliver 18–25°C, fewer crowds and lower prices.
Avoid December–February if you can. That's peak season, with the coast at its busiest and most expensive. June is the wettest month (about 12 rain days) and winter lows in George sit near 8°C — fine for whale watchers and budget travellers, cold for swimmers.
Most day tours from Port Elizabeth take strollers and provide infant seats, and several list themselves as suitable for all fitness levels. Two tours ask for moderate fitness — the Tsitsikamma day tour involves some walking on forest paths.
For the parks themselves, SANParks runs five accommodation units adapted for mobility-impaired guests: three in the Tsitsikamma section and two at Wilderness Ebb-and-Flow, plus three adapted campsite ablutions. These are held off the online booking system — email [email protected] or call +27 12 428 9111 directly. Don't book a standard unit and hope to swap on arrival.
At the Garden of Eden, just off the N2 between Knysna and Plettenberg Bay, there's a marked 800 m circular forest route usable by wheelchair, under giant yellowwood canopy.
Older visitors manage most big sights by car: the Knysna Heads, Wilderness beaches and the Storms River Mouth deck all involve short, gentle walks from parking. Knysna lagoon cruises need no walking at all. The safari-focused 5-day tour flags against booking with spinal injuries, pregnancy or poor cardiovascular health.
Every tour includes an air-conditioned vehicle, and most throw in bottled water plus tea and coffee stops — the Storms River Bridge viewpoint is the standard coffee break on day tours. The $159.69 Tsitsikamma tour adds on-board WiFi and snacks.
Inside the parks you'll find a restaurant and deck at Storms River Mouth rest camp, and shops and restaurants in Knysna, Wilderness and Plettenberg Bay towns. Carry some cash for small-town stops, but a working chip card is essential — the Plaatbos and Goesa gates are card-only, and the trend is spreading.
Multi-day tours vary on food. The $613.24 five-day includes breakfast; the $908.91 five-day covers meals and 4 nights' accommodation; the 4-day Cape Town tour covers breakfast but not lunch or supper. Vegetarian and halal options exist on the private 4-day if you ask at booking.
Overnight SANParks accommodation opens at 14:00 and closes out at 10:00. A 1% community fund levy applies to all park accommodation and activity bookings.
You'll sign an indemnity form at park entry, and adults must carry ID — rangers can request it from anyone. Gate times carry legal force under the Protected Areas Act, and driving after hours or recklessly inside parks is a cited offence.
Personal photography is free everywhere. Flash or lights on wildlife at night is banned.
South Africans drive on the left. Dress is casual — wear shoes with grip on forest trails and pack a windproof layer, because coastal weather turns fast.
Storms River, the route's eastern anchor, is 190 km from Port Elizabeth — about 2 hours on the N2. From there the classic stops stack up quickly: Plettenberg Bay is 68 km further west, then Knysna 32 km beyond that. Day tours from Port Elizabeth comfortably reach the Crags, just short of Plettenberg Bay, and back in 9–10 hours.
It depends what you want. The 9-hour Tsitsikamma tour ($159.69) includes national park entry, the Big Tree and Jeffreys Bay, and suits hikers. The 10-hour Crags tour ($217.84) includes Monkeyland and Birds of Eden entry and suits families. Both pick up anywhere in Port Elizabeth, including the cruise terminal.
Some do, some don't — check the inclusions before booking. The $159.69 Tsitsikamma day tour, the $821.81 four-day and the $684.78 three-day all include Tsitsikamma National Park entry, and the multi-day tours add Cango Caves and ostrich farm admission. If you're paying separately, Storms River Mouth costs R367 per international adult per day; Wild Card holders enter free.
Yes. Day tours pick up at the cruise terminal and drop you back there, with hotel pickup listed as a standard option. One tour operator specifically advertises cruise liner passengers, with pickup from 07:30 and a WhatsApp contact for coordination on the day. A 9–10 hour tour fits most port days — confirm your ship's departure time against the drop-off before booking.
Most don't. The 3-day tour ends at George airport or accommodation (or returns to Port Elizabeth with the guide, your choice), while the 4-day and both 5-day tours finish in Cape Town — one way, no backtracking. The 4-day can also run in reverse, starting in Cape Town, if that suits your flights better.
Yes, two ways. The 5-day tour at $908.91 opens with a Big Five game drive at Schotia Private Reserve and includes two game drives total. Alternatively, there's a 10-hour full-day safari tour from Port Elizabeth at $348.65 with lunch included. Addo Elephant National Park is also 190 km east of Storms River if you're arranging your own day.
The multi-day tours include a stop at the Bloukrans viewpoint, where you can watch jumpers and book on the day — the jump itself costs extra and isn't in any tour price. The bridge is 216 m above the river, the world's highest commercial bridge bungy. Non-jumpers can walk the Sky Walk out to the platform instead.
Most tours refund in full if you cancel at least 24 hours before departure. The 3-day George tour and the 4-day Cape Town tour are stricter — you must cancel 3 full days ahead or you get a 0% refund. Book the 24-hour ones if your plans might shift, and remember the 5-day $613 tour requires a minimum of 2 people per booking.
Year-round works, but pick your priority. Whale watching runs June–November and peaks July–September; wildflowers bloom August–September; beach weather is November–March. December–February is the busiest and most expensive stretch. April–May and September–October give you 18–25°C days with thinner crowds — that's when I'd go.
Yes, entirely — no prophylaxis needed anywhere on the route, unlike Kruger and the Lowveld. That's a big part of why it's South Africa's most popular self-drive and family destination. Domestic travellers fly the 50-minute hop from Cape Town to George Airport without any health prep.
