Most tours here cover the 200 km between Mossel Bay and Storms River, with the big stops being Knysna's lagoon, the Cango Caves near Oudtshoorn, and the suspension bridges at Storms River Mouth. Expect long drives — multi-day group tours run 4 to 6 hours behind the wheel most days — traded against game drives, forest hikes and cave visits you couldn't easily piece together on your own. Small groups, one English-speaking guide, and breakfast included is the standard package.
A short boardwalk from the rest camp car park leads through coastal forest to suspension bridges spanning the gorge where the Storms River meets the Indian Ocean. Allow 1–2 hours and arrive at 07:00 in summer — the gate opens then, and the bridges get busy by 09:00. This is also the start of the five-day Otter Trail.
At 216 m above the Bloukrans River, this is the world's highest commercial bridge bungy. Tours pre-book your slot and you decide on day one whether to jump; waiting time runs 1–2 hours. Non-jumpers can walk the Sky Walk to the platform instead.
Africa's largest show-cave system sits 55 km north of George, and nearly every multi-day tour includes the hour-long Heritage Tour (R150 adult, R100 child, departing hourly 09:00–16:00). You'll walk vast dripstone chambers beneath the Swartberg range. The Adventure Tour is temporarily unavailable.
Cruises cross the lagoon, pass through the sandstone Heads and follow the coastline's caves and coves — about 90 minutes on boats capped at 25 passengers. The estuary shelters the Knysna seahorse, which lives in only three estuaries on Earth. You can see live ones in the SANParks tank on Thesen Island.
Multi-day tours pair two drives: one in Addo Elephant National Park by minivan, one at Botlierskop private reserve in an open 4x4, where Big Five sightings are possible. Addo is SANParks' elephant park, 190 km east of Storms River. Both entrance fees are typically included in tour prices.
Between Mossel Bay and Knysna, tours stop for a group kayak on the calm Touw River or a canoe across the Wilderness lakes. Pied kingfishers and grey herons work the shallows. It's the calmest stretch of the route, and the most family-friendly.
Tours here range from 30-minute quad rides to 7-day Cape Town round trips, and the differences in pace are big — read the daily drive times before you commit. Here's what to sort out first.
Options include small-group minivan tours (3, 4, 5 and 7 days from Cape Town), a 10-hour day tour from Port Elizabeth to the Crags, and short activities like quad biking in Wilderness ($37), tandem paragliding ($81), lagoon cruises and canoeing. The 4-day Explore tour runs as private, small-group or singles, with a minimum of 2 adults. There's no audio-guide option — every tour comes with a live English-speaking guide.
The Otter Trail, if you're extending on your own, is capped at 12 hikers per day and sells out about a year ahead — SANParks opens bookings on the first working day of each month for dates 11 months out. Group tours can also fill in the December–February peak, so book 2+ days ahead minimum (that's also the cutoff for Cape Town hotel pickup on the multi-day tours). Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before departure on most tours.
Most multi-day tours include park entries (Cango Caves, Addo, Tsitsikamma), but check the inclusions list — the 3-day backpacker safari covers accommodation and meals but not activities like the bungy, which you pay the supplier for on the day. Independent visitors pay SANParks daily fees: R367 international adult at Storms River Mouth, R235 at Wilderness, R231 at Knysna. A Wild Card exempts you everywhere.
The 5-day and 7-day tours cover about 2,000 km total with 4–6 hours of driving most days; the 3-day highlights tour covers 1,200 km at the same pace. Operators themselves warn these are packed itineraries and suggest booking longer or private tours if you want a slower rhythm. If a minibus makes you queasy, this matters.
The standard route stretches inland to Oudtshoorn (ostrich farms, meerkat encounters) over the Outeniqua Pass, and Route 62 makes a scenic loop back to Cape Town instead of repeating the N2. Gqeberha and Addo sit 2 hours east of Storms River, which is where most tours turn around. Budget a half-day for the caves and pass detour if self-driving.
Tandem paragliding with Dolphin Paragliding is wheelchair accessible, and the Knysna cruise allows service animals with infants on laps (not recommended under 3). Multi-day minivan tours are flagged suitable for all fitness levels, though quad biking and canoeing exclude pregnant travellers and people with spinal injuries. Self-drive visitors will find an 800 m wheelchair-friendly forest loop at the Garden of Eden and five adapted SANParks units — email [email protected] for those.
Multi-day group tours set a minimum age of 8, with 8–17 year olds required to book private rooms — no under-18s in dorm packages. Short activities are more flexible: infants ride in prams on the quad ride and canoe tours. The Bloukrans bungy is teens and adults only.
Lagoon cruises and wildlife activities run subject to sea and weather conditions, and operators don't refund for missed marine sightings — the animals are wild. June averages about 12 rain days, so pack a waterproof layer even in summer. Paragliding launches shift between coastal and inland sites depending on wind.

SANParks day-visitor gates run 07:00–18:00 in summer (September–April) and 08:00–17:00 in winter (May–August). No entry outside these hours, and the times are strictly enforced — overstaying can draw a summons under the Protected Areas Act. The staffed Plaatbos and Goesa gates in Storms River Village keep the same hours.
Robberg Nature Reserve (CapeNature, Plettenberg Bay) opens 07:00–20:00 in summer and 08:00–18:00 in winter, with no entry in the hour before closing. Confirm current hours on capenature.co.za before you go.
Cango Caves run Heritage Tours on the hour, 09:00–16:00, daily except Christmas Day.
If you're overnighting in SANParks accommodation: check-in from 14:00, check-out by 10:00. Arriving at 15:00 in winter leaves you barely two hours of usable light, so plan accordingly.
By car: the N2 is the artery. Cape Town to Mossel Bay is 385 km (~4 h); from there it's 50 km to Wilderness, 45 km to Knysna, 32 km to Plettenberg Bay and 68 km to Storms River. Gqeberha sits 190 km (~2 h) east of Storms River. Rentals run about R350–R700/day in season, with one-way drop fees near R1,800.
By air: George Airport (GRJ) is the route's own airport, a 50-minute flight from Cape Town International, with rental cars at the terminal. Many travellers fly into Cape Town, drive east, and fly out of Gqeberha.
By bus: Intercape coaches serve George, Knysna and Plettenberg Bay from Cape Town (5–7 h); Baz Bus runs a hop-on hop-off backpacker service along the route. Neither covers the gaps between towns well, so most bus travellers add a rental or shuttles.
By guided tour: small-group multi-day tours depart Cape Town or Gqeberha from roughly $700–$1,400 per person, with hotel pickup included within 5 km of central Cape Town or Stellenbosch (book at least 2 days ahead for pickup).
Best overall: shoulder months April–May and September–October, with mild 18–25°C days, fewer crowds and lower prices.
Summer (November–March): beach weather with highs of 20–28°C, but December–February bring peak crowds and prices along the whole coast. Book accommodation months ahead.
Winter (June–August): coolest and wettest stretch — George sees lows around 8°C, highs near 20°C, and June averages about 12 rain days. The compensation: southern right whales pass the coast June–November, peaking July–September, and the Knysna Oyster Festival fills about 10 days in July.
Wildflowers bloom August–September. Whenever you come, the region gets rain year-round, so pack a waterproof layer regardless of season.
Wheelchair users: SANParks has five accommodation units adapted for mobility challenges (three in Tsitsikamma, two at Wilderness Ebb-and-Flow) plus three adapted campsite ablutions. These are held off the online booking system — email [email protected] or call +27 12 428 9111 directly. The Garden of Eden, right off the N2 between Knysna and Plettenberg Bay, has a marked 800 m circular forest route accessible to wheelchair users. Tandem paragliding with Dolphin Paragliding is fully wheelchair accessible.
Older visitors: the Knysna Heads, Wilderness beaches and the Storms River Mouth restaurant are all reachable by car, and the suspension bridges need only a short boardwalk stroll. Knysna lagoon cruises offer sightseeing without walking.
Children: sheltered swimming beaches, the suspension-bridge boardwalk and Knysna's waterfront all suit young families. SANParks charges children from age 2 (2–11 pay child rates). Multi-day group tours require a minimum age of 8; the Bloukrans bungy is strictly for teens and adults.
Detailed accessibility PDFs for the Wilderness, Tsitsikamma and Knysna sections are published on the SANParks website.
Conservation fees (1 Nov 2025 – 31 Oct 2026, per adult/child daily): Storms River Mouth R367/R183 international, R82/R41 for South Africans; Wilderness R235/R118 international; Knysna R231/R115; Nature's Valley R165/R82; Plaatbos and Goesa forest trails plus the Big Tree R96/R48 — card only, no cash at those gates. A Wild Card exempts you from all daily fees. Robberg Nature Reserve charges about R75/R55 at the gate (recent reports; Wild Card holders free).
Where to stay: SANParks rest camps at Storms River Mouth and Wilderness Ebb-and-Flow put you inside the park; check-in 14:00, check-out 10:00. A 1% community fund levy is added to accommodation and activity bookings.
Food and drink: tour packages include breakfast, with lunch en-route (limited options) and dinner in free time — guides point you to local restaurants, and backpacker accommodation usually has communal kitchens. Vegetarian options exist on request; vegan, halal and gluten-free aren't guaranteed, so plan alternatives.
Activities on site: kayak and lilo trips up the Storms River gorge, canopy tours and ziplines in Tsitsikamma, paragliding over Wilderness, and boat cruises from Mossel Bay, Knysna and Plettenberg Bay harbours.
Driving: South Africans drive on the left. Avoid night driving — the N2 between towns is poorly lit and baboons, livestock and unlit vehicles are real hazards. Refuel at major stations and lock doors in town. Gate times inside parks are legally enforceable.
In SANParks areas: firearms must be declared and sealed at the gate. No pets of any kind (transgressors face a summons and confiscation; only permitted guide dogs are exempt). No collecting plants, animals, dry wood or any natural or cultural items. Littering is fined, and alcohol can't be consumed in public areas.
Drones and cameras: drones need prior SANParks authorisation. Personal photography is fine; commercial filming requires a permit. Never use flash on wildlife at night.
At entry: sign an indemnity form and carry ID — it can be requested of any adult. On the Otter Trail, cross rivers (notably the Elandsbos and Lottering) at low tide and turn back if they're flooding; rangers monitor the trail (HQ 042 281 1607, police 10111).
The core Mossel Bay to Storms River drive is only about 200 km, or 2–3 hours non-stop, but that misses the point. Most tours run 3–5 days, operators recommend 5–7 nights, and 7–10 days if you add Oudtshoorn, the Cango Caves and Addo. The popular 5-day tour covers roughly 2,000 km total with 4–6 hours of driving most days.
It's optional on the multi-day tours. The operator pre-books space for the group, and you decide on day one whether to jump — you pay the supplier directly on tour. Waiting time at the bridge runs 1–2 hours depending on group size, and the activity is subject to weather. The jump is 216 m, the world's highest commercial bridge bungy.
On the multi-day group tours, yes — entrance to Cango Caves, Addo and Tsitsikamma is typically listed in the inclusions. The 1-day Port Elizabeth tour includes Tsitsikamma, Birds of Eden and Monkeyland entries. Short activities like cruises and quad rides don't involve park gates. If you're self-driving, budget R367 per international adult per day at Storms River Mouth, or get a Wild Card.
George Airport (GRJ) is the route's own airport, a 50-minute flight from Cape Town with rental cars at the terminal. Most group tours start in Cape Town, though, with hotel pickup within 5 km of the centre. If you're ending in the east, Gqeberha airport is about 2 hours from Storms River, and one-way rentals carry a drop fee of roughly R1,800.
Multi-day group tours set a minimum age of 8, and children from 8 to 17 must be accompanied by an adult and book private rooms — no under-18s in dorm packages. Shorter activities are looser: infants can ride in prams on the quad and canoe tours, and the Knysna cruise allows babies on laps (though it's not recommended under 3). The Bloukrans bungy is for teens and adults only.
The 3-day backpacker safari ($482.50) sleeps you in shared dorm rooms with dinner, breakfast and one 4x4 game drive included. The 5-day ($828.66) adds Addo Elephant National Park, the Cango Caves, Route 62 wine tasting and the Knysna Heads, with accommodation tiers from dorm to 4-star lodge. Both are fast-paced — the 5-day covers about 2,000 km.
Southern right whales pass this coast June–November, peaking July–September, and boat cruises run from Mossel Bay, Knysna and Plettenberg Bay. No operator guarantees sightings — marine mammals are wild and roam freely, and cruises don't refund for no-shows. Shore-based watching from cliff paths and Reebok's Kusweg near Mossel Bay costs nothing.
It's considered one of South Africa's safer tourist routes, but take standard precautions. Don't drive after dark — roads are poorly lit and you can meet baboons, livestock or unlit broken-down vehicles. Park in secure areas, keep valuables out of sight, and avoid township areas without a registered local guide. The region is entirely malaria-free, unlike Kruger.
Cruises and wildlife activities run subject to sea and weather conditions, and paragliding shifts launch sites depending on wind. Core stops like the Cango Caves (hourly 09:00–16:00) and the Storms River suspension bridges work in rain, though forest trails get slippery. Rain falls year-round here, so pack a waterproof layer whatever the season.
No — it's a self-guided SANParks hike, and tours don't include it. The 5-day, 42.5–45 km trail between Storms River Mouth and Nature's Valley costs R2,561 per person (huts included) and is capped at 12 hikers per day, selling out about a year ahead. Book through sanparks.org the month your date opens, or watch the cancellation list.
