Garden Route Hours & Fees

Nothing on the Garden Route is free to enter — SANParks charges daily conservation fees at each park section, from R82 per adult for South Africans at Storms River Mouth up to R367 for international visitors. Gates open 07:00 and close 18:00 sharp in summer (08:00–17:00 in winter), and the rangers don't bend on either.

Opening Hours

The Garden Route itself never closes — the N2 runs 24/7 — but the SANParks gates into Garden Route National Park do: 07:00–18:00 in summer (September–April) and 08:00–17:00 in winter (May–August), every day of the week, with no entry outside those hours and strict enforcement. Robberg Nature Reserve and the Cango Caves run their own clocks, listed below. If you're overnighting inside the park, check-in is from 14:00 and check-out by 10:00.

Day Hours Note
Monday–Sunday (SANParks gates: Storms River Mouth, Nature's Valley, Wilderness, Knysna) 07:00–18:00 (Sep–Apr); 08:00–17:00 (May–Aug) No entry outside these hours; gate times are legally enforceable and overstaying can result in a summons under the Protected Areas Act. Go early — Storms River Mouth is busiest 09:00–15:00.
Monday–Sunday (Plaatbos & Goesa gates, Storms River Village — forest trails and the Tsitsikamma Big Tree) 07:00–18:00 (Sep–Apr); 08:00–17:00 (May–Aug) Card payments only, no cash. Big Tree trail fees apply from 1 Dec 2025.
Monday–Sunday (Robberg Nature Reserve, Plettenberg Bay) 07:00–20:00, with no entry in the hour before closing Some current guides list 08:00–18:00 for winter (Oct–Apr summer being 07:00–20:00) — confirm on capenature.co.za before you go. The car park fills in season, so arrive early.
Monday–Sunday (Cango Caves, Oudtshoorn) Heritage Tours depart on the hour, 09:00–16:00 Closed Christmas Day. The more physical Adventure Tour is temporarily unavailable; the Heritage Tour is the easy one-hour option.
📅

The only fixed closure in the research is Christmas Day at the Cango Caves — every other Garden Route attraction listed here opens seven days a week, public holidays included. SANParks gate hours don't change for holidays, so a Christmas-Day visit to Storms River Mouth works as long as you're through the gate by 18:00 (17:00 in winter). Expect the biggest holiday crowds over December–February and during the Knysna Oyster Festival, which runs about 10 days in July.

Fees & Tickets

Entry to the Garden Route itself is free — you pay per park section. SANParks charges daily conservation fees (1 Nov 2025 – 31 Oct 2026), and they vary sharply by nationality: an international adult pays R367 at Storms River Mouth, while a South African adult pays R82.

Children aged 2–11 pay roughly half; under 2s enter free. Wild Card holders skip the daily fees entirely.

Best Time to Visit

The best months are the shoulders, April–May and September–October, when temperatures sit around 18–25°C, prices drop and the coast thins out. December–February bring the biggest crowds and highest rates along the whole route. If whales are the priority, come July–September, when southern rights pass close to shore — just expect rain in June.

Period Crowd Level Recommendation
Early morning (07:00–09:00) Low Gates open at 07:00 in summer (08:00 in winter), and this is your window for empty suspension bridges at Storms River Mouth and a parking spot at Robberg before the car park fills in season.
Mid-morning to mid-afternoon (09:00–15:00) High Peak hours at Storms River Mouth, the Knysna Heads and Robberg — fine for a lagoon cruise or the Knysna waterfront, but the worst time to fight for trailhead parking.
Late afternoon (15:00–17:00) Moderate Day-trippers head out and the light goes golden, though winter gates close at 17:00 sharp — plan to be through well before then, as gate times are legally enforced.
Evening (17:00–18:00) Low Only workable in summer, when gates stay open until 18:00 — best spent settling into your SANParks unit (check-in from 14:00) rather than starting a walk you can't finish.

How Long to Spend

Plan on 4–5 days to cover the Garden Route's highlights at a sensible pace; operators recommend 5–7 nights if you're driving yourself, while small-group guided tours compress the route into 3–5 days. The core Mossel Bay–Storms River drive is only about 200 km and takes 2–3 hours non-stop, but that defeats the purpose — this is a stop-everywhere coast. Allow 7–10 days if you want Oudtshoorn's Cango Caves, Addo Elephant National Park and proper hiking on the itinerary.

Drive the core N2 route, Mossel Bay to Storms River 2–3 hours non-stop
Storms River Mouth suspension bridges and boardwalk 1–2 hours
Robberg Nature Reserve walk (short stroll to the full 9–10 km Point circuit) 1–4 hours depending on circuit
Garden of Eden 800 m circular forest boardwalk 20–30 min
Cango Caves Heritage Tour (via Oudtshoorn, 55 km over the Outeniqua Pass) 1 hour
Hike the Otter Trail, Storms River Mouth to Nature's Valley 5 days / 4 nights

Visitor Tips

01

Book the Otter Trail Early

The Otter Trail caps at 12 hikers per day and sells out about a year ahead. SANParks only accepts bookings 11 months or less in advance, opening on the first working day of each month — be on sanparks.org the moment your date opens, or watch the cancellation list. The 5-day hike costs R2,561 per person, including four nights in serviced huts, plus a 1% levy and a R55 admin fee.

02

Beat the Gate Closures

Park gates open 07:00 in summer (Sep–Apr) and close 18:00 sharp, with winter hours 08:00–17:00 — times are legally enforced and overstaying can earn you a summons under the Protected Areas Act. Arrive at opening for golden light on the Storms River suspension bridges and a parking spot, since the busiest stretch everywhere is 09:00–15:00. Same rule at Robberg: its car park fills in season.

03

Carry Card, Consider Wild Card

The Plaatbos and Goesa gates in Storms River Village (Big Tree and forest trails) take card only — no cash — and Robberg is trending the same way. If you'll visit two or more SANParks sections (Tsitsikamma, Knysna, Wilderness) or add Addo, a Wild Card pays for itself, since holders skip all daily conservation fees. Otherwise you'll pay per section per day, up to R367 for international adults at Storms River Mouth.

04

Skip the December Crush

December–February is the busiest and most expensive time on the whole coast. Shoulder months (April–May and September–October) bring milder weather around 18–25°C with fewer crowds and lower prices. If you want whales, come June–November — they peak July–September, and July also delivers the roughly 10-day Knysna Oyster Festival.

05

Pack for Fast Weather

Rain falls year-round here, and forest trails and cliff paths turn slippery fast, so wear sturdy shoes with grip and layered clothing. Bring a windproof layer and sun protection for coastal hikes like Robberg's 9–10 km Point circuit, and check the forecast before you set out. Warm waterproof kit is essential for winter boat trips out of Knysna, Mossel Bay or Plettenberg Bay.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to enter Garden Route National Park?

SANParks charges daily conservation fees per section (1 Nov 2025 – 31 Oct 2026): Storms River Mouth costs R367 per international adult and R183 per child (2–11), while South African citizens pay R82/R41. Other sections differ — Wilderness is R235 international adult, Knysna R231, and Nature's Valley R165. A 1% community fund levy is added to accommodation and activity bookings, and Wild Card holders skip the daily fees entirely.

What are the opening hours at Garden Route National Park gates?

Day-visitor gates run 07:00–18:00 in summer (September–April) and 08:00–17:00 in winter (May–August), with no entry outside these hours — the times are strictly enforced. The staffed Plaatbos and Goesa gates in Storms River Village follow the same schedule. Overnight guests can occupy SANParks units from 14:00 and must vacate by 10:00 on departure.

Do I need to book the Otter Trail in advance?

Yes, and early: only 12 hikers start per day, and the serviced huts sell out roughly a year ahead. SANParks accepts bookings no more than 11 months in advance, opening on the first working day of each month, via sanparks.org or +27 12 428 9111. The 5-day, 4-night trail costs R2,561 per person (huts included) plus a 1% levy and a once-off R55 admin fee.

When is the best time of year to visit the Garden Route?

Shoulder months April–May and September–October deliver mild weather (roughly 18–25°C), fewer crowds and lower prices. December–February are the busiest and most expensive months; June is typically the wettest (about 12 rain days). Whale watchers should target June–November, peaking July–September, which overlaps with the roughly 10-day Knysna Oyster Festival in July.

How many days do I need for the Garden Route?

The core Mossel Bay–Storms River drive is about 200 km and takes 2–3 hours non-stop, but most travellers spend 4–5 days on the highlights. Operators recommend 5–7 nights, or 7–10 days if you're adding Oudtshoorn, the Cango Caves and Addo Elephant National Park. Rushing it in two days means skipping the suspension bridges, Robberg and the Knysna lagoon — the parts you came for.

Can I pay cash at the park entrance gates?

Not everywhere: the Plaatbos and Goesa gates in Storms River Village, which cover the forest trails and the Tsitsikamma Big Tree, accept card only — no cash. Robberg Nature Reserve shows the same card-only trend, so travel with a working chip card. The Big Tree gates charge R96 per international adult from 1 December 2025 (SA citizens R27).

Is a Wild Card worth it for the Garden Route?

If you'll visit two or more SANParks sections — Tsitsikamma, Knysna, Wilderness — or plan to add Addo or Kruger, yes: Wild Card holders are exempt from daily conservation fees across the whole system, including for Otter Trail hikers. A single day at Storms River Mouth already costs an international adult R367. Check current Wild Card prices against your itinerary before buying.
