"Four days felt exactly right for the Garden Route. Knysna Heads at sunset, the seahorse tank on Thesen Island, oysters in town. Our guide knew every viewpoint before the tour buses arrived. Had to cancel and rebook once — full refund came through within a week since we were outside the 6-day window."

"Heads up: it's a lot of driving. Something like six hours Cape Town to Mossel Bay with stops, then long hops after that. The stops are great — the Diaz Museum in Mossel Bay was a nice touch most tours skip — but if you hate sitting in a van, self-drive instead. Also they never once stopped at Bloukrans bridge, which I'd been keen on."

"We booked the Explore tour as a private trip, two of us plus our driver Sipho, who stayed with us the whole four days. The lunch platter on day three overlooking the Knysna lagoon was worth the price alone. Storms River suspension bridges were crowded by 10, so go early when the van stops there."

"Collected at 6:15 AM sharp from our guest house in Cape Town, exactly as the email said. Four long days but the guide rotated stops well — Betty's Bay penguins on day one, then the caves on day three. Tenikwa was the surprise hit for me. Bring a neck pillow, honestly."

"Did the Adventure & Safari version over New Year. Two game drives at Garden Route Game Lodge in one morning — saw white rhino and giraffe. Only gripe: January heat at the ostrich farm near Oudtshoorn was brutal, like 35 degrees. Take more water than you think you need."

"Solid trip overall. Whale watching in Hermanus was included but we were there mid-September and only saw two southern rights from quite far off — fine, but manage expectations. Cango Caves Heritage Tour is genuinely impressive for an hour. Vegetarian meals appeared when asked, no fuss."

What to Expect on a 4 Day Garden Route Tour

Four days is enough to cover the Garden Route's 200 km of coastline plus an inland loop to the Cango Caves, without the rush of a 3-day sprint. Expect early starts (collections from Cape Town begin around 6 AM), long stretches of driving on the N2, and a packed checklist: penguins, ostriches, caves, forests, and game drives. You'll sleep in two or three different towns, most commonly Knysna and Oudtshoorn, and have the same driver-guide with you the whole way.

🌉

Storms River Mouth

A short boardwalk from the rest camp car park leads through coastal forest to suspension bridges spanning the gorge where the Storms River meets the Indian Ocean. Allow 1-2 hours here. This is also the official start of the famous 5-day Otter Trail, so you'll share the viewpoint with hikers setting off.

🕳️

Cango Caves

Africa's largest show-cave system sits in the Klein Karoo below the Swartberg range, reached from George over the Outeniqua Pass. Most 4-day tours include the 1-hour Heritage Tour, which departs hourly from 09:00 to 16:00. The Adventure Tour through the narrow crawl passages is temporarily unavailable.

🦩

Ostrich Country

Oudtshoorn calls itself the ostrich capital of the world, and tours stop at a working ranch such as Cango Ostrich Farm. You'll see birds up close and hear how the feather boom shaped this dusty Karoo town. It's a 40-minute drive over the pass from George.

🐘

Game Drives

Several 4-day itineraries include two game drives at Garden Route Game Lodge, so you get a safari fix without the detour to Kruger. The region is entirely malaria-free, so no prophylaxis needed. Bring binoculars if you have them; the vehicles usually don't supply them.

🌊

Knysna Heads & Lagoon

The sandstone Heads guard the narrow mouth of the Knysna estuary, best viewed from the Eastern Head viewpoints or a sunset lagoon cruise. The estuary shelters the Knysna seahorse — found in only three estuaries on Earth, all on this coast. Live specimens are on display in the SANParks tank on Thesen Island.

🐧

Penguins & Whales

Cape Town–departing tours typically stop at Betty's Bay penguin colony on the way east, and land-based whale watching in Hermanus when in season. Southern right whales pass this coast June to November, peaking July–September. Whale watching is seasonal, so check what your dates will actually get you.

Things to Know Before Booking

Both 4-day tours on this page run about $860–$915 per person, depart from Cape Town, and cover the coast plus the Oudtshoorn inland loop. The differences are in group size, meal inclusions, and how much entry-fee coverage you get.

Tour Formats

The 4 Day Garden Route Adventure & Safari runs as a shared small-group minivan tour with a driver-guide. Explore The Garden Route - 4 Days runs either as a private trip or a singles/small-group option, with the same chauffeur-driver-guide throughout. Both operate in English and use air-conditioned vehicles on the shared version.

When to Book

December–February is peak season along the whole coast, with the highest prices and fullest vehicles, so book summer departures well ahead. Shoulder months April–May and September–October run milder (roughly 18–25°C) with fewer crowds. The Adventure & Safari tour requires cancellation at least 24 hours before departure for a full refund.

Entry Fees

The Adventure & Safari tour includes Cango Caves Heritage Tour, Cango Ostrich Farm, Betty's Bay penguin colony entry, Tsitsikamma National Park entry, and two game drives. The Explore tour includes Tenikwa Wildlife Centre, Cango Caves, the ostrich ranch, the Diaz Museum, and a Seal Island cruise. If you extend on your own, SANParks charges R367 per international adult per day at Storms River Mouth.

Independent Add-ons

From the route's towns you can book the Bloukrans Bridge bungy (216 m, the world's highest commercial bridge bungy) or a Storms River kayak and lilo trip up the gorge — most operators are based in Storms River Village and Plettenberg Bay. Gqeberha and Addo Elephant National Park sit 190 km (about 2 hours) east of Storms River if you want a safari finale. The Otter Trail, however, must be booked directly through SANParks and sells out about a year ahead.

Meals Included

Adventure & Safari covers dinner on days 1, 2, and 3, breakfast on days 2, 3, and 4. The Explore tour includes breakfast, lunch, bottled water, and a lunch platter on day 3, and offers vegetarian or halal options if you advise at booking. Either way, budget for a few meals and drinks yourself.

Accessibility

Both tours state they're suitable for all fitness levels, with specialized infant seats available. The Adventure & Safari tour flags that it's not recommended for travelers with poor cardiovascular health. Note that SANParks itself has five wheelchair-adapted units (three in Tsitsikamma, two at Wilderness Ebb-and-Flow) if you're extending independently — those must be booked directly by email.

Stricter Refunds

The Explore tour's cancellation policy is much tighter than the 24-hour norm: full refund only if you cancel at least 6 full days before departure, 50% between 2 and 6 days, and nothing within 2 days. Check which policy applies to your booking before committing dates. A minimum of 2 adults is required for that tour to run.

Pickup Logistics

Adventure & Safari collections start from 6 AM onwards from homes, hotels, and guest houses in and around Cape Town City, with exact times emailed 1–3 days before departure. The Explore tour arranges hotel pickup and drop-off from both Cape Town and Port Elizabeth, but the road transfer carries an additional charge. Passport details are required at booking for all participants on the Explore tour.

Plan Your Visit to Garden Route

SANParks day-visitor gates on the Garden Route run 07:00–18:00 in summer (September–April) and 08:00–17:00 in winter (May–August). There is no entry outside these hours, and gate times are strictly enforced — overstaying can result in a summons under the Protected Areas Act.

Other stops on a 4-day itinerary keep their own hours. Robberg Nature Reserve opens 07:00–20:00 in summer (October–April) and roughly 08:00–18:00 in winter, with no entry in the final hour — confirm on capenature.co.za. The Cango Caves Heritage Tours depart on the hour from 09:00 to 16:00, daily except Christmas Day.

Overnight SANParks guests can occupy units from 14:00 and must vacate by 10:00. Tour pickups from Cape Town typically start from 6 AM, with exact collection times emailed 1–3 days before departure.

  • Storms River Mouth, Knysna, and Wilderness gates: summer 07:00–18:00, winter 08:00–17:00
  • Cango Caves: hourly tours 09:00–16:00, closed Christmas Day
  • Busiest window at all major sights: 09:00–15:00 — go early

Most 4-day tours depart from Cape Town, with hotel pickups in and around the city from 6 AM. The N2 is the main artery: Cape Town to Mossel Bay is 385 km (about 4 hours), and the core route continues east past George, Wilderness, Sedgefield, Knysna, and Plettenberg Bay to Storms River.

Driving yourself? Cape Town to Wilderness takes about 4.5 hours; from there, Knysna is 35 minutes, Plettenberg Bay another 25, and Storms River 50 minutes beyond that. Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) airport sits 190 km (2 hours) east of Storms River and works as an exit point — many travelers rent one-way, paying a drop fee of roughly R1,800.

  • Flight: Cape Town to George Airport (GRJ) is a 50-minute hop; rentals available at the terminal
  • Bus: Intercape coaches and Baz Bus hop-on hop-off service connect Cape Town to Garden Route towns (5–7 hours)
  • East-side start: The Explore tour arranges pickup from Port Elizabeth for an additional charge

The Garden Route is a year-round destination, but April–May and September–October are the sweet spots: roughly 18–25°C, fewer crowds, lower prices. Rain falls year-round here, so no month is dry — June is the wettest, averaging about 12 rain days.

Summer (November–March) brings beach weather with highs of 20–28°C, but December–February is the busiest and most expensive period along the whole coast. Book those dates well ahead.

Winter has its own drawcards. Southern right whales pass the coast June–November, peaking July–September — the same window as the 10-day Knysna Oyster Festival in July. Wildflowers bloom August–September. George winter lows sit around 8°C with highs near 20°C, so pack warm layers for early game drives and boat trips.

Both tours on this page state they're suitable for all fitness levels and offer specialized infant seats. The Adventure & Safari tour is not recommended for travelers with poor cardiovascular health. The Explore tour allows infants and small children in a pram or stroller.

The route itself is manageable for older visitors: the Knysna Heads, Wilderness beaches, and the Storms River Mouth restaurant and deck are reachable by car with short, gentle walks — the suspension bridges are only a short boardwalk stroll from the car park.

Independent travelers with mobility challenges should know SANParks has five adapted accommodation units (three in Tsitsikamma, two at Wilderness Ebb-and-Flow) plus three adapted campsite ablutions. These are held off the online system — book directly via [email protected] or +27 12 428 9111. At the Garden of Eden, just off the N2 between Knysna and Plettenberg Bay, a marked 800 m circular forest route is wheelchair accessible.

Overnights on a 4-day tour are typically split between Knysna and Oudtshoorn, with Knysna's waterfront providing restaurants, shops, and lagoon cruises. SANParks rest camps at Storms River Mouth and Wilderness Ebb-and-Flow have restaurants, shops, and camping or cabin accommodation.

Payment logistics matter at some gates. The Plaatbos and Goesa gates in Storms River Village (covering those trails and the Tsitsikamma Big Tree, from 1 December 2025) are card only — no cash, at R96 per international adult. Robberg has gone the same way, so travel with a working chip card plus some cash for small towns.

A Wild Card exempts holders from daily SANParks conservation fees everywhere in the system — worth it if you'll visit two or more sections (Tsitsikamma, Knysna, Wilderness) or add Addo or Kruger. A 1% community fund levy applies to SANParks accommodation and activity bookings. Cango Caves Heritage Tour costs R150 adult / R100 child; Robberg entry runs around R75 adult at the gate, free with a Wild Card.

Standard sightseeing needs no special permit — pay the daily conservation fee at each park gate or carry a Wild Card. Inside SANParks areas, firearms must be declared at the gate and sealed; pets of any kind are banned (only assistance guide dogs with permits are exempt); and no plants, animals, dry wood, or any natural items may be collected or removed.

Visitors must sign an indemnity form at park entry and carry acceptable identification, which can be requested of any adult. Alcohol may not be consumed in public areas of the parks. Littering is prohibited and fined.

For photographers: personal photography is freely allowed, but commercial filming inside SANParks requires a permit, and drones need prior SANParks authorisation — don't fly without one. Never use flash or lights on wildlife at night. South Africans drive on the left; avoid night driving on the N2, where you may meet baboons, livestock, pedestrians, or unlit vehicles.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a 4-day Garden Route tour from Cape Town include?

The 4 Day Garden Route Adventure & Safari (from $915.20) includes 3 nights' accommodation, dinner on days 1–3, breakfast on days 2–4, Cango Caves Heritage Tour, Cango Ostrich Farm, Betty's Bay penguin colony entry, Tsitsikamma National Park entry, and two game drives at Garden Route Game Lodge. Pickup from Cape Town hotels from 6 AM and transport by air-conditioned minivan are covered. Gratuities and some unspecified extras are not.

Can I start or end my 4-day tour in Port Elizabeth instead of Cape Town?

Yes, on the Explore The Garden Route - 4 Days tour, which arranges hotel pickup and drop-off from both Cape Town and Port Elizabeth for an additional charge. The Adventure & Safari tour lists a round-trip shared transfer that can run "back to front," so check your specific option. If you're self-driving, Storms River to Gqeberha is 190 km (about 2 hours) on the N2.

Will I see whales on a 4-day Garden Route tour?

Only if you travel in season. Southern right whales pass this coast June–November, peaking July–September, and the Adventure & Safari tour includes seasonal land-based whale watching in Hermanus. Outside those months you won't get whales, though boat cruises from Mossel Bay, Knysna, and Plettenberg Bay run year-round and often find dolphins and seals.

Do I need to pay park entry fees on top of the tour price?

The Adventure & Safari tour covers Tsitsikamma National Park entry, and the Explore tour covers Tenikwa Wildlife Centre, Cango Caves, the ostrich ranch, the Diaz Museum, and a Seal Island cruise. If you add stops independently, SANParks charges per section per day: Storms River Mouth is R367 per international adult (R183 child), Wilderness R235, and Knysna R231, valid for the 1 Nov 2025 – 31 Oct 2026 period.

Is the Garden Route malaria-free?

Yes, entirely. No prophylaxis is needed anywhere on the route, including the Oudtshoorn inland loop — unlike Kruger and the Lowveld. This is one reason the region is South Africa's most popular family and self-drive destination.

How far in advance should I book a 4-day Garden Route tour?

For December–February departures, book well ahead — that's peak season, with the highest prices and fullest vehicles along the whole coast. For the Adventure & Safari tour you can cancel for a full refund up to 24 hours before departure, but the Explore tour needs 6 full days' notice for a full refund and pays nothing if you cancel within 2 days. Note the Explore tour also requires a minimum of 2 adults to run.

How much walking is involved on a 4-day Garden Route tour?

Both tours list themselves as suitable for all fitness levels. The main walking stops — the Storms River Mouth suspension bridges, Cango Caves Heritage Tour (an easy 1 hour), and ostrich farm — involve short, gentle walks. Strenuous options like the 5-day Otter Trail or Robberg's full 9–10 km Point circuit are separate commitments you'd book independently.

Can I do the Otter Trail as part of a 4-day tour?

No — the Otter Trail is a 5-day, 4-night hike covering 42.5–45 km between Storms River Mouth and Nature's Valley, and it must be booked directly through SANParks. It's capped at 12 hikers per day and sells out roughly a year ahead, with bookings only accepted 11 months in advance, opening on the first working day of each month. A 4-day tour will show you the trail's start point at the suspension bridges, nothing more.

What is there to do at Bloukrans Bridge if I don't want to bungy jump?

Non-jumpers can do the Sky Walk out to the jump platform or watch from the gorge-facing deck — it's an easy stop right on the N2 between Plettenberg Bay and Storms River. The bridge is 216 m above the Bloukrans River and hosts the world's highest commercial bridge bungy. Note that the bungy and canyon swings are strictly for teens and adults, and tour itineraries usually treat Bloukrans as an optional add-on rather than an included stop.

Do the tours cater to vegetarian or dietary requirements?

The Explore The Garden Route - 4 Days tour offers vegetarian or halal meal options if you advise at the time of booking. The Adventure & Safari tour includes set dinners (days 1–3) and breakfasts (days 2–4), so flag any allergies or restrictions with the operator when your collection email arrives, 1–3 days before departure.
